Orion AM celebrates eight years

Berlin based since 2018

Today, Orion AM turns 8 years old.

We've been printing ultra-high-performance polymers (HPPs) for almost a decade.

Thank you to all our customers and partners: for trusting our systems to unlock additive manufacturing of demanding polymer filaments for your most challenging applications, from aerospace to dental implant applications. Thank you for growing with us.

As we look back, a few thoughts on how we got here:

Heat the part, not the air.
Our unique approach to printing ultra-HPPs like PEEK and ULTEM™ 9085 is simple: our systems use Thermal Radiation Heating (TRH) to heat the part itself, rather than the air around it. Prints thus achieve semi-crystallinity in-situ, eliminating the need for post-process annealing. The tensile strength results speak for themselves: parts processed via TRH come out near-isotropic, pass injection-molding benchmarks (90+ MPa in the Z-axis), and achieve up to 99,95% relative density in CT scans.

Bet on materials and their makers.
We partner with the world's leading material producers, including but not limited to Evonik, Invibio, Victrex, and Lehmann&Voss&Co. KG to optimize our systems for the best materials available on the market. Optimizing for aerospace- and medical-grade filaments unlocks AM for the right materials for load-bearing, space-ready, patient-specific applications.

Slow and steady growth wins the race.
We run and scale lean. In our seventh year, we grew from five to nine, and moved into a new facility in Berlin Moabit to expand our production capacity.

Innovate with research partnerships.
Alongside building units for our customers, we've collaborated with our local Berlin research community to develop the cutting edge of AM capabilities for space applications. Research has expanded our capabilities with carbon fiber filament, shape memory polymers (SMPs), and laser-direct structurable (LDS) polymers to integrate electronics directly onto printed surfaces.

Stay tuned for updates and expanded capabilities for our systems soon. We're ready for the next 8. Reach out via our contact us page if you're expanding your HPP capabilities to push the boundaries of material science, prototyping, or series production.
